Compound Movements

A lot of people I know workout. They go to the gym and do the machines or they focus one day on legs, one day on arms, one day on shoulders and so on. One thing that I have learned through my reading, the Jillian Michael's videos and my trainer, Tammye is the importance of compound movements. These are so crucial for weight loss.
Basically, Weight lifting exercises can be separated into two broad categories: compound movements and isolation movements. Isolation exercises are those which move a single joint through its range of motion. Examples include the bicep concentration curl or the tricep kickback which both involve the elbow, the leg extension involving the knee, or calf raises which involve the ankle. They’re called “isolation” exercises because they put major stress on a single, isolated muscles. Compound exercises are multi-joint movements that rely on the coordinated actions of several muscle groups to move two or more joints through a range of motion. The squat, for instance, involves both ankles, knees and hips and puts major stress on the quads, hamstrings, glutes, back and core, and a host of small, stabilizing muscles.
Lets think about it. What are your big muscles in your body? Your biceps? Nope! Your back, chest, abs, legs and butt! If you only have a minimum amount of time then this is where you need to focus. Building these muscles will also build some of the smaller muscles by default from the exercises and it will help turn your body into a fat burning machine. You got to get the most bang for your buck. If you can work out your larger muscles while adding some small muscle exercises at the same time you can get more in your workout for a lot less time. For example as you do lunges also do bicep curls, as you do squats also do shoulder press, as you do bench press lift up your butt and squeeze those glutes and legs. Do you get the idea?

Give it a try! Here is a really great article that gives you lots more details.

Day 4

Today seemed easier!  While I am still wanting that diet soda full of delicious carbonation I still have not had one!  I started off the morning with a protein packed breakfast similar to yesterday.  Then I headed to the gym to meet my friend for some weight lifting.  Today was a jam packed day and I had a hair cut appointment at noon.  I thought that I would come straight home afterwards and eat my left overs from dinner last night and then go pick up my boy from kindergarten.  However, my hair cut took longer than expected and because I live in Greenback I hated to go back home only to have turn around 15 minutes later to go back to Maryville.  So, I ate an apple and ran thru Starbucks for an iced coffee.

I had about an hour to spare; I called my husband to check in for the day and he suggested that I kill my hour at the mall.  What man tells a woman to kill time at the mall? An awesome one!  Anyways, I had worn a hole in my Zumba shoes and needed a new pair.  I scored some great deals at JC Penny; 2 new pairs of workout capris, 4 new t-shirts and a new pair of shoes from the Shoe Depot.  I am looking forward to getting to use some of my new gear at Zumba tomorrow!

As soon I got home I ate some meatloaf, I was pretty hungry.  For dinner I made a huge, hearty salad. Recipe is below.  There will be a separate post on pumping iron, coming soon.  Till then you can read my past post on compound movements here.

Chicken & Chickpea salad
  • 2 large romaine hearts, washed and chopped
  • 1 cup pulled cooked chicken breast

  • 1/4 cup crumbled goat cheese
  • 1/3 cup cilantro, washed and chopped
  • 1 small avocado, diced

More torture

Here are a few videos of some of the latest torture that I have went through. Try these at home for some fun and a challenge. It is hard to post these videos....I know that they are not attractive and that my workout clothes accent every problem of my body. Not quite the same as posing in a new outfit from Macy's or a new dress, however I wanted you all to see what I am doing. This literally is 5% of the workout. It is too hard to show you everything but I figure I can give you little bits and pieces. Also, most of what I am showing you, you can do at home as they are compound movements only using your own body weight or small dumbbells.

3 weeks, 7 weeks

3 weeks exactly until we leave for East Idaho to see my husband's family and enjoy a vacation. We are planning to take the kids to Yellowstone National Park and Jackson Hole, WY which are both close to his parents house. Then after we get home I will have 4 weeks until I will fly back to Idaho to sing in my cousin's wedding and to see my mom and lots of fun friends. Only I will be going to Boise with the kids. Trav doesn't have enough vacation time to take two trips to Idaho within a month. I am a little scared to have both kids on the plane with just me but I will just pray that it goes alright.

I am kind of freaking out cause it has been a long time since I have seen a lot of these people. I really want to be able to wear a cute dress to my cousins wedding. Her colors are watermelon & orange! Orange is seriously my best color :)

I don't want to set a bunch of unrealistic goals either. I am just shooting for 2 pounds a week. Every week! Even during vacation. I am at 170 on the dot....right now. I talked to my trainer last night and we are trying to come up with a game plan. She gave me 5 compound movements that I can do in my home gym 2-3 days a week and then I will workout with her and the girls 1-2 times per week. I am also trying to convince her to call me while I do my 20 minutes of cardio intervals, 2 mornings a week and then I will continue to take my high intensity zufu class on Tuesday days.

I wish I could be with her more. It is just hard with the kids. Travis watches them a lot at night and I don't have a ton of options in the day. Wish I could find someone that lived by the gym that could just watch them for an hour or so while I went. I'll post a weigh in next Thursday...please hold me accountable to this!

Happy Birthday Tammye

(Tammye and I at the Sugarland concert)

Yesterday was Tammye's birthday; so a quick tribute. I like to tell people that Tammye is like my mama bird. A little more than a year ago I entered her nest and she taught me how to fly. She gave me all of the tools to learn to work out and gave me the passion and motivation to work on my goals. She has got to be one of the most knowledgable trainers I have ever met.

When I first met her I knew how to work out. I knew all the basic moves (i.e., bench press, squat, curls, etc) but she taught me much more about compound movements and how to burn the most calories in the shortest amount of time. Sometimes I felt like I was hopping on one foot, patting my head and rubbing my belly at the same time....but it worked. I got more balance, more strength and more endurance.

As many of you know I have left the Tammye nest. I have joined a gym and now that I know how to fly I am trying to take my fitness to another level; and while I am at it show some of my friends how to fly too. I still visit the nest and go back for more. I am loving Weekend Warrior and all of the motivational texts and talks Tammye and I have. I know that she is one of my biggest fans and believes in me.

Truth be told, I am one of her biggest fans too. She has invested lots of time into me and I love her for that. I have shared things with her that I wouldn't share with very many people. You should see my before pictures. Can you imagine me in a sports bra and bikini bottom? Yuck. Yep...she has seen it. Probably didn't want to but she did.

She has became one of my closest friends and I can't wait to finish the journey and to make her proud. Happy Birthday Tammye! You have changed my life more than you will ever know. Words do not express how grateful I am to have found you and to have you be a part of my life. Thanks for being such a great support! I promise that I am going to finish this thing!
